Porsche, one of the foremost car manufacturer’s of the world, has confirmed reports that they are ready with a new model, the new Panamera grand tourer, which they have decided to showcase at this year’s Shanghai Auto Show to be held in April. Company sources also reveal that the original plan was to launch the model a month earlier at the Geneva Motor Show, but it had to be postponed because of unavoidable circumstances.

If things goes as planned the public can get a glimpse of the car on the 19 April when it goes on stage, a day before the Shanghai show gets underway. According to reports emanating from the company, the shift was made to accommodate the growing potential of China to consume these products, as well as its neighbours India and Russia who are fast turning out to be a fertile market for the car manufacturers. The cars that are slated to be revealed at the show, it has been expected, will include the normally aspirated V8 as well as the twin-turbocharged V8 variants.

The potential of the Chinese market is taking centre stage of late, what with major car maker Stuttgart selling a record 8,190 units in the last financial year. This is in direct contrast to what has been observed in established markets like Germany, where sales dropped by more than 5% over the same period, forcing the manufacturers to chalk out their future strategies as well as long term business policies.

Porsche CEO, Wendelin Wiedeking was quite forthright when speaking about the growth of new markets, while established markets take the tumble, as he stressed the need to make their presence felt in still nascent markets like China and the Middle East. Even Porsche accessories, such as cologne, perfume, and trainers like the Adidas Porsche Design S2 mens trainers, are being targeted at these emerging markets as well. The Porsche name carries with it a reputation for luxury and class that is recognised worldwide.

The company has already set a production limit of 20,000 cars per year to meet the demands of the discerning customer, with the provision to chop it down in case sales don’t live up to the anticipated levels.

Porsche is on the threshold of unleashing the company’s first four-door sports car, the Porsche Panamera, which incidentally will be the fourth vehicle in the German luxury carmaker’s lineup. The details of this new development were released by Porsche SE on the 24th November, 2008. Company sources also added that the teardrop shaped Panamera sports has front air intakes instead of the traditional radiator grille model.

The model measures 76 inches in width and 55.8 inches in height which is comparatively wider and lower compared to similar other models by the other companies.

The production of this new model will be carried out at the company’s plant in Leipzig, Germany, with a slated world wise release in the spring of 2009. The first models of the car will however be released in the US in the fall of next year.

The car is actually based on the V-engine model and will be available in either a V-6 or V-8 configuration, and will have an output range of between 300 and 500 horsepower. We can also expect the car model to include numerous luxuries, such as a voice guided sat nav, handsfree kit, quality seats, and more. On the sidelines of the release of this model, the company also hinted that it will very soon come up with a more fuel-efficient version replete with a hybrid powertrain.

The Panamera, in addition, will feature all-wheel or rear-wheel drive models the detail of which, including pricing and other vehicle specification will be available in spring.
It is important to note that Porsche has seen a sharp decline in fortune in recent times, with unit sales tumbling by a precarious 23% in the current year. Nevertheless, the company has managed to withstand the disaster all thanks to its stake in Volkswagen AG, where it earned a reported profit of 52%.
